Stefan Hurtig approaches the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig (GfZK) by making it subject of his installation of video clips. The installation titled featuring/featuring consists of three individual video works: Minne, Eyes without a Face, and Fading like a Flower. Dedicating songs to the gallery’s institutional framework, architectural space, and collecting activity, he addresses issues at the heart of contemporary art. Rewritten pop songs serve as a textual basis for this video compilation.
The video Fading like a Flower highlights the blind spot of collecting: ’the losses’. By detecting traces of decayed, destroyed, or missing works of art in the museum’s depot, these are literally re-presented.
featuring/featuring thus transforms the exhibition space into a digital stage for the artist’s perfomance with selected works from the gallery’s collection. By reverting the process of featuring and being featured Hurtig exhibits the manifold relations among institutional settings, visiting publics, and artistic interests that constitute museums of contemporary art.
